Green CardIn order to work and live in the United States on a permanent basis, a non-citizen must apply for a permanent resident card, commonly known as a Green Card. There are several ways an individual can obtain permanent resident status, although most Green Card applicants are sponsored by a family member or U.S. employer. Other ways of obtaining a Green Card include through refugee or asylee status or other humanitarian programs.

Family-Based ImmigrationThere are two groups of family based immigrant visa categories, including immediate relatives and family preference categories. Immediate relatives: Applies to limited relatives of U.S. citizens including spouses, parents, and children. Special rules apply for spouses of U.S. citizens if the marriage has been less than two years in duration.
Preference Relatives: Applies to certain other relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents, including: married and unmarried sons and/or daughters (over 21) of U.S. citizens; brothers and/or sisters of U.S. citizens; spouses, minor children, and unmarried sons and/or daughters (over 21) of U.S. permanent residents. Immediate relatives do not face waiting times for visa availability and may also qualify to file Form I-485 to adjust status. There are several ways you can petition for relatives and family to immigrate to the United States: – Family of U.S. Citizens – Family of Green Card Holders (Permanent Residents) – Family of Refugees and Asylees – Same Sex Marriages |
